"The wound is the place
where the light comes in."
"You cannot find peace
by avoiding life…"
The Hours (Virginia Woolf)
I am Catherine Macer and I am a Psychodynamic Counsellor offering in-person, online and phone counselling to adults and young people.
Life is not always easy. It is a truth that none of us can avoid.
The fact that you are looking at these pages suggests that there is something in your life that feels stuck, painful, maybe hopeless or unreachable, and that you want something different for yourself – that you want to find a path to change.
Perhaps you want to free yourself from repetitive patterns of behaviour, self-limiting beliefs or the impact of trauma – to deepen your connection to yourself so that life feels richer, more rewarding and that you feel more authentically you.
I understand that asking for help is not easy, in fact it may be one of the hardest things you ever do. Self-discovery may feel daunting, and takes courage, but I invite you to begin.
"Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.”
The cornerstone of my counselling is to offer you a safe, empathetic and thoughtful space in which you feel both seen and heard. Here, we will work at your pace to explore together the many parts of you that have brought you to this moment. This may include current situations, as well as parts of your past, life events and ways of being that you may feel define you, but perhaps no longer serve you.
I draw on several key therapeutic modalities, all built upon my core psychodynamic training. These include a deep respect for our embodied experience, for the 'felt sense' of ourselves – and all the truths that our bodies hold; an understanding of our many 'parts' those that we know and love, and others that are more uncomfortable and challenging, or perhaps unknown; the power of movement to process feelings and give meaning to experience, and the development of mindfulness to create awareness, self knowledge and focus.
"This is your body, your greatest gift, pregnant with wisdom
you do not hear, grief
you thought was forgotten,
and joy you have never known."
I believe that our stories are in our bodies, in our relationships to ourselves, in our relationship to others, and in our ways of being in the world. Once we start to shine a light on our internal world, to feel deeply into ourselves, to give ourselves permission to heal, we may come to feel differently about ourselves and our life, and from this place, can make new choices.
